The Listening Experience: Developing an Analytic Voice
Nancy Wolf, LCSW, Presenter

The Psychoanalytic Training Institute of NYFS has developed a new Adult Psychoanalysis curriculum based on the idea that training in and learning about the practice of psychoanalysis are best facilitated by listening to clinical process and learning theoretical concepts through this listening.

A listening-based approach keeps theory alive and relevant, and allows beginning analysts to develop their analytic ears and voices more readily. The first two years of course work focus on development, developmental theory, and on the introduction of analytic concepts. In years three and four, candidates study specific theories of the mind and participate in a continuous case presentation.

Nancy Wolf, LCSW, is Chair of the Adult Psychoanalysis Curriculum Committee, and a Training and Supervising Analyst, Faculty Member, and Past President of the Psychoanalytic Training Institute of NYFS. She has written and taught about the theories and ideas of Wilfred Rupert Bion, whose work on the importance of learning from experience directly informs the new curriculum. Ms. Wolf is in private practice in Manhattan. Her paper, “Bion’s infant: How he learns to think his thoughts,” [(2003). Infant Observation, The International Journal of Infant Observation and Its Applications, 6, 1] will be distributed to Open House participants.

The Psychoanalytic Training Institute of NYFS also offers training in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalysis, and a two-year training program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. Information about these programs will also be available at this Open House.
